A serious confrontation or dispute between people, groups, or countries because of different interests, opinions, or goals.
Der politische Konflikt zwischen den beiden Ländern dauert schon mehrere Jahre an.
The political conflict between the two countries has been going on for several years.
To name the parties involved, you use 'zwischen' (+ dative) (between). If you yourself are part of a dispute, you use the expression 'in Konflikt mit' (+ dative) 'stehen' or 'geraten' (to be in / get into conflict with).
Der Konflikt zwischen den beiden Abteilungen bremst das ganze Projekt.
The conflict between the two departments is slowing down the whole project.
Common verbs used with 'Konflikt' (conflict) are 'einen Konflikt lösen' or 'beilegen' (to resolve a conflict). The opposite is 'einen Konflikt schüren' (to fuel a conflict).

When it is about a psychological dilemma, 'Konflikt' (conflict) is almost always accompanied by an adjective like 'innerer' (inner), 'seelischer' (emotional/psychological), or 'persönlicher' (personal). This lets you recognize this meaning immediately.

'der Krieg' and 'der Konflikt' can both mean a serious confrontation between people, groups, or countries. 'Konflikt' is broader and more neutral: it can be political, work-related, or private, and it does not have to involve weapons. 'Krieg' is stronger and usually means an armed conflict. Learners may confuse the words because a war is also a conflict. But many conflicts are resolved through talks or decisions and are not wars.
Im Team gibt es einen Konflikt, weil zwei Kolleginnen verschiedene Ziele haben.
There is a conflict in the team because two colleagues have different goals.
