Usage tips
Separable verb
'Abbiegen' is a separable verb. The prefix 'ab-' comes at the end in a main clause. In subordinate clauses and in the infinitive with 'zu', the verb stays together.
EXAMPLE
Ich biege an der nächsten Kreuzung links ab.
I turn left at the next intersection.
Er hat nicht gesehen, dass ich abgebogen bin.
He didn't see that I had turned.
Vergiss nicht, an der Ampel abzubiegen.
Don't forget to turn at the traffic light.
Different auxiliary verbs
The auxiliary verb in the perfect tense depends on the meaning. For changing direction (movement), you use 'sein' (to be); for bending an object (an action), you use 'haben' (to have).

Correct preposition

Abbiegen names the turn into another street or onto another path, while biegen in this meaning is normally used with „um die Ecke“ or „um die Kurve“.
