“Ansammlung” (accumulation/gathering) is a noun derived from the separable verb “sich ansammeln” (to accumulate; to gather). The ending “-ung” turns the action of collecting into a thing, namely the collected quantity.

'die Gruppe' and 'die Ansammlung' can both refer to several people or things that are in one place. 'die Gruppe' sounds more organized or connected: the people or things form a unit. 'die Ansammlung' puts more emphasis on many people, objects, or data collecting in one place. They do not necessarily have to truly belong together. For a team or a fixed unit, 'Gruppe' is more natural; for many things or people in one place, 'Ansammlung' often fits better.
