'da' and 'anwesend' can both mean that a person is at a place. 'da' is short, general, and very natural in everyday speech. 'anwesend' is more precise and a little more formal; it is often used at school, in meetings, at appointments, or on lists. The words can be confused because both can describe the same situation. If you just want to say normally that someone is there, 'da' fits. If it is about participation or official attendance, 'anwesend' is better.
