auslassen vs vergessen

to forget

'vergessen' and 'auslassen' can both lead to something not being done, not being said, or not being mentioned. The important difference is intention. 'vergessen' means: you did not think of it. 'auslassen' usually means: you deliberately skip something or do not include it. That is why they can be confused when something is missing in a text or conversation. If it was a mistake due to inattention, 'vergessen' fits. If you leave it out on purpose, 'auslassen' fits.
