This verb is very often used in the passive, or the past participle 'ausgeschildert' (signposted) is used as an adjective. The focus is then on the condition of the route, not on the person putting up the signs.

'kennzeichnen' and 'ausschildern' both have to do with visible signs or markings. 'kennzeichnen' is general: something receives a feature, a marking, or a label. 'ausschildern' is more specific and is used for paths, routes, or places that are marked with signs so that people can find their way. A danger area can be 'gekennzeichnet' (marked), but a hiking trail or a detour is 'ausgeschildert' (signposted). When signs show the way, 'ausschildern' is the more precise word.
Vor dem Wochenende wird der neue Radweg gut ausgeschildert.
