'Baugruppe' (assembly / building group) consists of 'Bau' (construction / building) and 'Gruppe' (group). The two meanings arise because 'Bau' can mean both the 'construction' of a part and the 'building' of a house.

As a practical rule: in technical devices, 'Baugruppe' is more precise; in more general contexts, 'Einheit' is usually better.
