The state of being known or recognized by many people. It describes the degree to which a person, brand, or place is famous.

'Bekanntheit' (fame/awareness) is derived from the adjective 'bekannt' (known). The ending '-heit' turns adjectives into nouns that describe a state or quality—here, the state of being known.

Bekanntheit is something that can be actively achieved. Typical verbs are 'Bekanntheit erlangen' (to gain fame/recognition), 'an Bekanntheit gewinnen' (to become better known), or 'seine Bekanntheit steigern' (to increase one's visibility/awareness).

The degree of Bekanntheit is often described with adjectives. Common combinations are 'große Bekanntheit' (great fame), 'geringe Bekanntheit' (low awareness), or 'internationale Bekanntheit' (international recognition).

'die Präsenz' and 'die Bekanntheit' can both have to do with the effect a person, brand, or company has in public. 'Präsenz' means that someone or something is visible and noticeable, for example on social media, at trade fairs, or in a city. 'Bekanntheit' means how many people know or recognize this person, brand, or place. The words can be confused because a strong presence often leads to greater recognition. Still, they are not the same: you can have a very strong presence but not yet be known everywhere.
