'Beleidigend' (offensive) is the present participle of the verb 'beleidigen' (to insult). It is used like a normal adjective to describe a person, an action, or a statement.

The word can also be used as an adverb to describe how an action is carried out. It then remains unchanged after the verb.

personal / in person
'persönlich' and 'beleidigend' can both refer to hurtful words. 'beleidigend' directly says that something hurts a person's feelings or dignity. 'persönlich' is a bit more specific in this sense: it means that a statement is no longer just about the topic, but attacks the person themselves. Not every personal remark is automatically offensive, but when an argument gets personal, it can quickly become offensive.
