Bergland vs Gebirge

mountain range

'das Gebirge' and 'das Bergland' both describe landscapes with many mountains or hills. 'Gebirge' more often means a large, connected mountain landscape with many mountains, often including higher mountains. 'Bergland' is more general and can also mean a hilly or less high landscape. The words can be confused because both describe an entire region, not just a single mountain. When the mountains are distinct and appear as a large range or mass, 'Gebirge' is more precise. For a landscape with many elevations that are not necessarily very high, 'Bergland' fits better.
