Usage tips
Word composition
The word is a simple compound of 'hoch' (high) and 'Land' (land). It literally refers to a land or region that is located high up.
EXAMPLE
Das Hochland ist durch eine karge Vegetation gekennzeichnet.
The highlands are characterized by sparse vegetation.
Geographical names
'Hochland' (highlands) is very often used together with an adjective or a name to refer to a specific region. Well-known examples are 'das schottische Hochland' (the Scottish Highlands) or 'das Hochland von Bolivien' (the highlands of Bolivia).
EXAMPLE
Im Urlaub haben wir eine Tour durch das schottische Hochland gemacht.
On vacation, we took a tour through the Scottish Highlands.

Pay attention to the prepositions: when you are located in the area, you are 'im Hochland' (in the highlands, dative). When you travel there, you go 'ins Hochland' (to/into the highlands, accusative).

Hochland vs Gebirge
mountain range
'Gebirge' and 'Hochland' both describe landscapes at higher elevations. A 'Gebirge' consists mainly of many mountains, that is, mountain ranges or a mountain massif. A 'Hochland' is a large area that lies at a high elevation overall; it may have mountains, but it does not have to consist only of mountains. The words can be confused because highlands are often mountainous. If you mean the mountains themselves, 'Gebirge' is more precise. If you mean a high-lying region in contrast to lowland, 'Hochland' fits better.
