The process or result of assessing a person, thing, or situation in order to form an opinion about its value or quality.

evaluation
A formal, often written evaluation of a person's performance, for example at school (report) or in the workplace (employee evaluation).
Im jährlichen Mitarbeitergespräch erhielt sie eine sehr positive Beurteilung.

The word 'Beurteilung' (assessment/evaluation) is derived from the verb 'beurteilen' (to assess/evaluate), which in turn goes back to 'das Urteil' (judgment). So a 'Beurteilung' is literally the result or process of coming to a judgment about something or someone.

What is being assessed very often appears in the genitive directly after 'Beurteilung' (assessment/evaluation). In spoken language, the preposition 'von' with the dative is sometimes used as well.

When it is about a general assessment, the word is often used in fixed expressions. Typical examples are 'nach meiner Beurteilung' (in my assessment) or 'zu einer Beurteilung kommen' (to come to an assessment).

In the context of work or school, 'Beurteilung' (evaluation) refers to a formal performance evaluation. Common combinations are 'eine positive/negative Beurteilung bekommen' (to get a positive/negative evaluation) or 'eine Beurteilung schreiben' (to write an evaluation).

criticism / review
Kritik and Beurteilung can both concern the quality of someone’s performance. Kritik highlights mistakes or weaknesses. A Beurteilung assesses the performance as a whole and can be a formal result; it does not have to be negative.
Die Vorgesetzte bewertete seine gesamte Arbeit in einer schriftlichen Beurteilung.
The supervisor assessed his entire body of work in a written evaluation.
