Usage tips
Word structure
The word 'Bücherei' (library) is derived from 'das Buch' (book). The ending '-erei' often denotes a place where something is made, collected, or sold, as also in 'Bäckerei' (bakery) or 'Metzgerei' (butcher's shop).
EXAMPLE
The old library in the city center has a special atmosphere.
Correct preposition
With 'Bücherei' (library), the preposition 'in' is important. Movement to the place is expressed with the accusative ('in die Bücherei' — to the library), while being at the place requires the dative ('in der Bücherei' — in/at the library).
EXAMPLE
Am Nachmittag gehen wir in die Bücherei.
In the afternoon we're going to the library.
Typical collocations
In connection with a public library, verbs such as 'ausleihen' (to borrow), 'zurückgeben' (to return), or 'verlängern' (to renew/extend) are often used. For example, you can borrow books, but also other media such as CDs or films.
EXAMPLE
I must remember to return the books to the library on time.
Context clue
The meaning 'private book collection' can often be recognized from the context. It is frequently used with possessive pronouns, e.g. 'seine Bücherei' (his library), or in the description of a private room.
EXAMPLE
My grandfather is very proud of his private library.

Bücherei vs Bibliothek
library
'Bibliothek' and 'Bücherei' often mean almost the same thing: a place where you can borrow or use books and other media. 'Bibliothek' sounds a bit more general and is used especially for larger or academic institutions, for example at a university. 'Bücherei' often sounds more everyday and fits well for a smaller public institution in a town or school. Both words can also be used for a private collection. The words can be confused because they are interchangeable in many everyday situations.
Paul goes to the library every Friday and borrows comics.
Bibliothek
Before the exam, Maria often studies in the university library.
