Debatte vs Gespräch
conversation
'das Gespräch' and 'die Debatte' both have to do with speaking and opinions. 'das Gespräch' is broad and can take place in everyday life, at work, or in a formal situation. 'die Debatte' is usually more formal, more public, and more focused on different positions on a topic. You often hear the word in politics, society, or important decisions. Learners may confuse the words because in both cases people are talking to each other. For a normal meeting or discussion, 'Gespräch' fits; for a public or clearly opinion-based exchange, 'Debatte' is better.

Im Parlament beginnt heute eine Debatte über günstigere Wohnungen.
A debate about more affordable housing begins in parliament today.

In der Bibliothek war das Gespräch nur kurz, weil alle leise sein sollten.
