The ability to understand and get an overview of a complex situation, system, or topic. The word is usually used in the expressions 'den Durchblick haben/verlieren' (to have/lose the overview).
Nach zwei Stunden Einarbeitung hatte ich endlich den Durchblick bei der neuen Software.
After two hours of training, I finally had an understanding of the new software.
'Durchblick' (understanding/view through) is made up of 'durch' (through) and 'Blick' (look/view). The literal meaning is therefore a 'look through something'. This helps you understand both the concrete and the figurative meaning.
Ich brauche einen Moment, um mir einen Durchblick zu verschaffen.
I need a moment to get an overview.
The most common use is in fixed expressions. You can say 'den Durchblick haben' (to understand / have the overview), 'den Durchblick verlieren' (to lose track / no longer understand), or 'den Durchblick bekommen' (to start understanding).
Bei all den neuen Regeln verliert man schnell den Durchblick.
With all the new rules, you quickly lose track.
The figurative meaning of understanding is much more common in everyday life than the literal meaning of a view through an opening. If the context is knowledge or complex topics, it almost always means understanding.

In the literal meaning, a preposition is often used to indicate what one is looking at. A typical construction is 'einen Durchblick auf etwas (Akkusativ) haben' (to have a view through to something).

'Ahnung' and 'Durchblick' can both have to do with knowledge or understanding, especially in the expressions 'keine Ahnung haben' (to have no idea) and 'den Durchblick haben' (to understand / have the overview). The difference is important: 'keine Ahnung haben' often simply means that you do not know something or do not have an answer. 'Durchblick haben' means that you understand a whole situation, system, or difficult topic. The words can be confused because both are used when there is uncertainty. For a single piece of information, you would more likely say 'keine Ahnung'. For a complicated topic, you would more likely say 'keinen Durchblick haben' (to have no overview / not understand what is going on).
