'Überblick' is made up of 'über' (over) and 'Blick' (look/view). It literally means a 'look over' something. This explains both the meaning of a wide view and that of summarized knowledge of a topic.
Von hier oben hat man einen tollen Blick über die ganze Stadt.
From up here, you have a great view over the whole city.
When you want to say what you have an overview of, you use the preposition 'über' with the accusative. This applies to both the abstract and the literal meaning.
Ich brauche einen Überblick über die aktuellen Verkaufszahlen.
I need an overview of the current sales figures.
In the context of information and knowledge, 'Überblick' is often used with certain verbs: 'einen Überblick geben' (to give an overview), 'einen Überblick bekommen' (to get an overview), or 'sich einen Überblick verschaffen' (to get an overview for oneself).

The expression 'den Überblick verlieren' (to lose track) is very common. It means that in a complex situation, one no longer has control or orientation.

'die Sicht' and 'der Überblick' can both have to do with how you see or understand something. 'Sicht' often means the ability to see, for example in fog, or a personal perspective on a topic. 'Überblick' more often means that you can grasp the whole thing well: a situation, a topic, or also a landscape from above. When talking about weather or an opinion, 'Sicht' is more natural. When you want to organize a lot of information or understand the whole picture, 'Überblick' fits better.
