'Übersicht' (overview) is a compound noun made from 'über' (over) and 'Sicht' (view). It literally describes a 'view from above' of something, which helps you see the big picture.

The second meaning is almost always used in fixed expressions. The most important ones are 'die Übersicht behalten' (to keep track of everything) and 'die Übersicht verlieren' (to lose track).

Learners may confuse the words because both organize information. If you want to collect individual points, 'Liste' fits. If you want to give a quick view of the whole thing, 'Übersicht' fits better.
