In 'eh und je' (as always / as ever), 'eh' is part of a fixed adverbial expression. It is almost always preceded by 'seit' (since) or 'wie' (as): 'seit eh und je' means 'always' or 'since time immemorial', while 'wie eh und je' means 'as always'.
Auch mit achtzig Jahren arbeitet er wie eh und je jeden Tag im Garten.
