Usage tips
Word structure
The word is made from the separable verb 'einwandern' (to immigrate). The prefix 'ein-' means 'in' or 'into', 'wandern' here means 'to move' or 'to migrate', and the ending '-er' refers to the male person.
EXAMPLE
Seine Familie ist vor 50 Jahren nach Deutschland eingewandert.
His family immigrated to Germany 50 years ago.
Word family
'Der Einwanderer' (the immigrant) is part of a word family. The related verb is 'einwandern' (to immigrate), and the process is called 'die Einwanderung' (immigration). Understanding these connections makes learning easier.
EXAMPLE
Die Einwanderung von Fachkräften ist für die Wirtschaft wichtig.
The immigration of skilled workers is important for the economy.
Correct preposition
To name an immigrant's country of origin, you use the preposition 'aus' (from). So the person is an 'Einwanderer aus' (immigrant from) a particular country.
EXAMPLE
In unserer Straße leben viele Einwanderer aus der Türkei und Polen.
Many immigrants from Turkey and Poland live on our street.

Einwanderer vs Flüchtling
refugee
'Flüchtling' and 'Einwanderer' both describe people who have come to another country. The difference is the focus. A refugee had to leave their homeland because there was danger there. An immigrant moves to another country in order to live and work there permanently. This can be voluntary, or at least not directly determined by immediate danger. The words can be confused because a refugee may later also live permanently in a new country. For fleeing danger, you say 'Flüchtling'. For permanent life in a new country, you are more likely to say 'Einwanderer'.
Einwanderer
Auf dem Amt unterstützt Herr Yilmaz einen Einwanderer bei den ersten Schritten in Deutschland.
At the office, Mr. Yilmaz supports an immigrant with the first steps in Germany.
Flüchtling
