empfinden vs haben

to have

'haben' and 'empfinden' can both have to do with feelings, states, or personal impressions. 'haben' is the normal and simple word: you can have fear, hunger, pain, or a good feeling. 'empfinden' puts more emphasis on inner feeling or personal perception and sounds somewhat more elevated. It is also often used with 'als', for example 'etwas als unangenehm empfinden' (to perceive something as unpleasant). Learners may confuse the words because sometimes you can say both, such as 'Angst haben' (to be afraid) and 'Angst empfinden' (to feel fear). In everyday language, 'haben' is usually more natural; 'empfinden' fits when you are describing the feeling more precisely or more consciously.
