Inseparable verb
'entsetzen' (to horrify / relieve) is an inseparable verb: the prefix 'ent-' stays attached to the verb in main clauses. The verb is not separated in subordinate clauses either.
EXAMPLE
Die Bilder entsetzten ihn, obwohl er viel Leid gesehen hatte.
The images horrified him, even though he had seen a great deal of suffering.
Reflexive use
Without 'sich' (oneself), 'entsetzen' (to horrify) describes something that causes horror in another person. With 'sich', the verb describes the person who feels fright or horror themselves.
EXAMPLE
Der Bericht entsetzte die Leser.
The report horrified the readers.
Die Leser entsetzten sich über den Bericht.
The readers were horrified by the report.
Fixed preposition
In its reflexive sense, 'sich entsetzen' (to be horrified) is often used with 'über' (at / by) and the accusative. The preposition introduces the cause of the horror or dismay.

Genitive construction
In the archaic expression 'jemanden seines Amtes entsetzen' (to remove someone from office), the person affected is in the accusative and the office they are stripped of is in the genitive. This fixed expression is found mainly in historical texts.
