fassen vs nehmen

to take

'nehmen' and 'fassen' can both mean grasping something or someone with your hand. The difference lies in the focus: 'nehmen' usually means taking something toward yourself or getting hold of it. 'fassen' puts stronger emphasis on gripping and holding on. That is why you are more likely to say 'ein Glas nehmen' (to take a glass) when you want to use it, but 'jemanden am Arm fassen' (to take someone by the arm) when you put your hand on their arm and hold it. With people, it can also be about arrest or capture: 'gefangen nehmen' (to take prisoner) is possible; 'einen Täter fassen' means that you catch and arrest the offender. The words can be confused because both have to do with grasping, but 'nehmen' is more general and 'fassen' sounds more precise when it comes to holding on.
