When a person is meant, the word is often combined with adjectives such as 'großzügig' (generous), 'wichtig' (important), or 'privat' (private). Someone is often a 'Förderer von' (supporter of) art, science, or a specific project.

In the technical meaning, a more specific word such as 'Förderband' (conveyor belt) or 'Fördermaschine' (conveying machine) is often used. The standalone word 'Förderer' (conveyor) is less common here.

The Unterstützer helps a person or project in various ways, for example through work, money, or encouragement. The Förderer refers especially to targeted, often longer-term financial or moral support from a person or institution. Use Unterstützer for general help, and Förderer for this kind of support.

The foundation was named as the project's sponsor for several years.
