'Der Führer' (the guide/leader) is the noun form of the verb 'führen', which means 'leiten' (to lead) or 'den Weg zeigen' (to show the way). The ending '-er' refers to the person or object that performs the action.

The word is very strongly associated with Adolf Hitler, the dictator of Nazi Germany. Because of this negative historical meaning, it is often avoided today, especially when talking about political leaders.

In compound words, 'Führer' (guide/leader) is neutral and very common. Words like 'Reiseführer' (guidebook), 'Stadtführer' (city guide), or 'Bergführer' (mountain guide) can be used without concern.

Even though the word is often avoided, there are fixed terms in political journalism in which it is still used, for example 'Oppositionsführer' (opposition leader) for the leader of the largest opposition party.

'der Chef' and 'der Führer' can both mean a person who leads a group. However, they are used very differently. 'der Chef' is the normal word for a boss or a person with authority, especially at work. 'der Führer' can mean a leading person, but in this sense it often sounds problematic or unusual, also because of the word's historical meaning. You should be very careful with it for political or authoritarian leadership. Learners may confuse the words because both have to do with leadership. In everyday work situations, 'Chef' is almost always correct; 'Führer' is used more in fixed compounds or very specific contexts.
