The title Adolf Hitler held as dictator of Nazi Germany. Because of this historical burden, the word is often avoided today.

'Der Führer' (the guide/leader) is the noun form of the verb 'führen', which means 'leiten' (to lead) or 'den Weg zeigen' (to show the way). The ending '-er' refers to the person or object that performs the action.

The word is very strongly associated with Adolf Hitler, the dictator of Nazi Germany. Because of this negative historical meaning, it is often avoided today, especially when talking about political leaders.

Even though the word is often avoided, there are fixed terms in political journalism in which it is still used, for example 'Oppositionsführer' (opposition leader) for the leader of the largest opposition party.

Chef and Führer can refer to a person at the head of an organization. In everyday German today, Chef is the usual term for a superior; Führer often sounds inappropriate or politically loaded in this context. Chef is therefore usually a better fit for a normal workplace context.
