Usage tips
Two origins
'Gelobt' can come from two different verbs, which explains the different meanings. It is the past participle of 'loben' (to praise) or of 'geloben' (to vow / to solemnly promise).
EXAMPLE
Der Lehrer lobt die fleißige Schülerin.
The teacher praises the hardworking student.
Sentence structure with 'für'
When someone is praised, the reason for the praise often appears in the sentence with the preposition 'für' (for). The structure is: 'für etwas gelobt werden' (to be praised for something).
EXAMPLE
Die Köchin wurde für ihr fantastisches Essen sehr gelobt.
The cook was highly praised for her fantastic food.
Fixed expression
Today, this meaning is found almost exclusively in the fixed expression 'das gelobte Land' (the promised land). This expression has a biblical origin and is often used metaphorically for a longed-for goal.
EXAMPLE
Für viele Auswanderer war Amerika das gelobte Land.
For many emigrants, America was the promised land.

gelobt vs anerkannt
recognized
'anerkannt' and 'gelobt' both have to do with positive evaluation. 'gelobt' says that someone has received praise, often for a specific action or achievement. 'anerkannt' goes further: it describes a stable reputation or a quality that is generally valued. You can be praised for a good presentation without already being recognized as an expert. The words can be confused because praise can be a form of recognition. In practice: 'gelobt' fits individual situations, while 'anerkannt' is more about lasting respect.
gelobt
Die Verkäuferin wurde gelobt, weil sie dem alten Kunden so geduldig geholfen hat.
The saleswoman was praised because she helped the elderly customer so patiently.
anerkannt
Nach vielen Jahren ist er heute ein anerkannter Lehrer für Deutsch.
After many years, he is now a recognized teacher of German.
