'Geschichtsschreibung' is more specific and refers to the research and presentation of history, or to historical works on a topic. The words can be confused when talking about books about the past. In that case, 'Literatur' means more the existing body of texts, while 'Geschichtsschreibung' means more the historical presentation and work with history.
