Describes something that you first have to get used to because at first it is unfamiliar, strange, or not immediately pleasant.

The taste of the new drink is a bit of an acquired taste.
The word is made up of 'Gewöhnung' (getting used to something) and 'bedürftig' (in need of). Literally, it means that something 'requires getting used to' or is 'in need of getting used to'.
Die neue Software ist kompliziert und daher sehr gewöhnungsbedürftig.
The new software is complicated and therefore really takes some getting used to.
This word is often a polite and indirect way to say that you do not like something, at least not yet. Instead of 'Das Design ist hässlich' (The design is ugly), you can say: 'Das Design ist etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig' (The design is a bit of an acquired taste).

Ungewohnt initially only means that something is unfamiliar. Gewöhnungsbedürftig additionally says that it takes time to adjust because it seems strange or is not immediately pleasant at first. Ungewohnt is therefore more suitable for a neutral statement.
Die Bedienung des neuen Programms ist gewöhnungsbedürftig, weil wichtige Funktionen schwer zu finden sind.
The new program takes some getting used to because important functions are difficult to find.
