The absence of something that is necessary or desired; a situation in which there is not enough of something.

The two main meanings can be distinguished well: 'Mangel an etwas' (lack of something), with the preposition 'an', describes that something is missing. 'Ein Mangel an einer Sache' (a defect in something), often with the genitive or 'an', describes a defect.

In the context of flaws or defects, 'Mangel' (defect) is often used with verbs such as 'aufweisen' (to exhibit), 'haben' (to have), 'beseitigen' (to remove), or 'beheben' (to fix). A 'versteckter Mangel' is a hidden defect that you do not see immediately.

The expression 'in Ermangelung' (in the absence of) is a formal preposition, often used in administrative or legal language, that requires the genitive. It means 'because there is no ...'.

mistake / error
'der Fehler' and 'der Mangel' can both refer to something that is not right. With objects, they can overlap: a product can have a 'Fehler' or a 'Mangel'. 'Fehler' also fits wrong answers, decisions, or actions. 'Mangel' often means that something is missing or that an item does not have the expected quality. That is why the words can be confused when talking about devices or products. For an incorrect calculation, you would usually say 'Fehler'; for missing quality or missing parts, 'Mangel' is more likely.
