'das Jahr' and 'das Lebensjahr' can both occur when talking about age. 'Jahr' is the normal unit when you say how old someone is: 'sechs Jahre alt' (six years old). 'Lebensjahr' means a particular year in a person's life and sounds more formal. You often hear it in rules, medicine, or official texts, for example 'ab dem 18. Lebensjahr' (from the age of 18). Learners may confuse the words because both have to do with age. In everyday language, people usually say 'Jahre'; in official statements, often 'Lebensjahr'.
