mitbekommen vs bekommen

to get / receive

'bekommen' and 'mitbekommen' can both have to do with someone receiving something. 'bekommen' is general: you get a letter, a gift, or an answer. 'mitbekommen' can mean that you receive something to take with you, for example food for the road. Very often, however, 'mitbekommen' also means that you notice, find out about, or understand something. This is why learners may confuse the words: 'Ich habe den Brief bekommen' means that the letter arrived and I received it. 'Ich habe das Gespräch mitbekommen' means that I heard or noticed the conversation.
