'der Fahrer' and 'der Mitfahrer' are clearly opposite in meaning. Both people are in a vehicle, but only the driver operates it. The passenger just rides along and sits, for example, in the front passenger seat or in the back. Learners may confuse the words because both take part in the same trip. The simple rule is: the person steering is 'der Fahrer'; the person who is not steering is 'der Mitfahrer'.
