The department in a company or organization that is responsible for all employee-related matters, such as hiring, contracts, payroll, and staff development. It is also called Human Resources (HR).

The word is made up of three parts: 'das Personal' (the staff/employees), the linking '-s', and 'die Abteilung' (the department). So it is literally the department for the staff.

personnel development
The Personalabteilung is responsible for many employee-related matters and may also oversee training. Personalentwicklung, by contrast, refers specifically to the area that develops employees’ skills through support and qualification. Use „Personalabteilung“ for overall responsibility and „Personalentwicklung“ for the specific training-related task.
Die Personalabteilung organisiert für alle Mitarbeitenden eine Schulung.
