'Planung' (planning) is a noun derived from the verb 'planen' (to plan). The ending '-ung' turns a verb into a feminine noun that describes the action or the result of that action. This pattern is very common in German, e.g. 'warnen' (to warn) → 'die Warnung' (the warning).
Wir planen unsere Reise. Die Planung ist fast abgeschlossen.
We are planning our trip. The planning is almost complete.
When referring to the process of planning, the word is often used with certain prepositions and verbs. Typical phrases are 'in der Planung sein' (to be in planning), 'mit der Planung beginnen' (to begin planning), or 'die Planung übernehmen' (to take over the planning).
Das neue Schwimmbad ist noch in der Planung.
The new swimming pool is still in the planning stage.
When the result, meaning the finished plan, is meant, other collocations are common. These include 'laut Planung' (according to plan), 'sich an die Planung halten' (to stick to the plan), or 'die Planung ändern' (to change the plan).
Laut Planung sollten die Arbeiten morgen beginnen.
According to plan, the work should begin tomorrow.
plan
'der Plan' and 'die Planung' are closely related because both are about how something should be done in the future. 'der Plan' is usually the concrete idea or the result: you have a plan. 'die Planung' often means the process, that is, thinking through, organizing, and deciding things. But it can also mean the finished result. That is why learners can easily confuse the words. A practical rule is: when you are talking about the work before the event, 'Planung' usually fits. When you are talking about the concrete solution or intention, 'Plan' usually fits.
