'Plural' is a grammatical technical term. It is used especially when learning or talking about language, for example in German class.
EXAMPLE
In der Prüfung mussten wir den Plural von unregelmäßigen Nomen bilden.

Typical sentence patterns
To ask about or state the plural form, the sentences 'Wie lautet der Plural von ...?' (What is the plural of ...?) and 'Der Plural von ... ist ...' (The plural of ... is ...) are very common.

'die Mehrzahl' and 'der Plural' mean the same thing in grammar: the form for more than one person or thing. 'Plural' is the typical technical term in German lessons and grammar explanations. 'Mehrzahl' sounds a little simpler and is also often used as an explanation for 'Plural'. They can be confusing because 'Mehrzahl' has another meaning as well: it can also mean the majority of a group. When talking about words and forms, however, both mean the same thing.
