report
A factual, usually written or oral account of facts, events, or observations.

The project manager has to write a report on the progress every week.

The noun 'der Bericht' (report) comes directly from the verb 'berichten' (to report). When someone reports, that person creates a Bericht.
Die Journalistin berichtet live vom Ort des Geschehens.
The journalist is reporting live from the scene.
To name the topic of the report, you almost always use the preposition 'über' followed by the accusative.
Ich muss einen Bericht über die Konferenz schreiben.
I have to write a report on the conference.
Common verbs used with 'Bericht' are 'schreiben' (to write), 'verfassen' (to compose/write), 'lesen' (to read), 'vorlegen' (to submit/present), or 'präsentieren' (to present).
Der Ausschuss wird seinen Abschlussbericht nächste Woche vorlegen.
The committee will submit its final report next week.
The phrase 'Bericht erstatten' (to report) is more formal than 'berichten' (to report). It is often used in official or professional contexts when a subordinate reports to a superior. The person who receives the report is in the dative.
Der Soldat musste seinem Kommandanten täglich Bericht erstatten.
The soldier had to report to his commander every day.
story / history
'die Geschichte' and 'der Bericht' can both tell about events. The main difference is the purpose. A 'Geschichte' can be exciting, personal, or fictional, and is often told in a way that makes people enjoy listening. A 'Bericht' is meant to inform objectively and sticks to the facts. Learners may confuse the words because both present a sequence of events. When it is about school, work, news, or official information, 'Bericht' is usually more precise. When it is about a narrative, 'Geschichte' fits better.

Der Mitarbeiter schreibt einen Bericht, weil es im Lager einen Unfall gab.
The employee writes a report because there was an accident in the warehouse.
Im Unterricht schreibt Lena eine Geschichte über eine Reise ans Meer.
In class, Lena writes a story about a trip to the sea.
