'Rasse' is used mainly for bred domestic animals or cultivated plants within a species, for example dogs. For humans, 'Rasse' is very problematic and scientifically outdated; the word is viewed critically because of its connection to racism. The confusion arises because both words sound like classifications. A safer rule is: for animals and plants, think of 'Art' first; use 'Rasse' only for bred groups such as dog breeds.
