In technology, a signal that is sent back from a system or component to a control unit in order to confirm a state or a completed action.
Der Sensor gibt eine Rückmeldung an die Steuerung, sobald die Temperatur den Sollwert erreicht hat.
The sensor sends a feedback signal to the control unit as soon as the temperature has reached the target value.
The word is made up of 'Rück-' (back) and 'Meldung' (message, report). A 'Rückmeldung' is therefore literally a 'message that comes back'.

In everyday language, 'Rückmeldung' (feedback/response) is often used with the verbs 'geben' (to give), 'bekommen' (to receive/get), or the phrase 'um Rückmeldung bitten' (to ask for a response). It describes the exchange of information.
Wir bitten um eine schnelle Rückmeldung, ob Ihnen der Termin passt.
We ask for a quick response as to whether the appointment works for you.
If you want to say what the feedback or response refers to, use the preposition 'auf' (to/on) followed by the accusative.
Die Rückmeldung auf meinen Vorschlag war sehr positiv.
The feedback on my proposal was very positive.

Both words refer to a reaction to an inquiry. An Antwort usually addresses the content directly, whereas a Rückmeldung can simply communicate that the message was received, give an update on the current status, or express an initial reaction. For a factual solution, Antwort is therefore the better choice; for a mere reaction, Rückmeldung also fits.
