The word is made up of 'rund' (round/around) and 'Schau' (view/show, from 'schauen' — to look). It literally means 'a view that goes all around.' This explains both meanings: an overview of the news and a panoramic view over a landscape.

'die Übersicht' and 'die Rundschau' can both give an overview of several topics or events. 'Übersicht' is the normal, neutral word for a clear summary. 'Rundschau' is used more for media, for example newspapers, broadcasts, or texts that briefly present various current topics. The words can be confused because both bring together several pieces of information. If you mean a plan, a list, or a summary, 'Übersicht' is more natural. If it is about news or developments from different areas, 'Rundschau' fits better.
