schocken vs beruhigen

to calm

'beruhigen' and 'schocken' both describe a strong effect on feelings, but in opposite directions. 'beruhigen' means that someone becomes calmer again or that you bring another person to a calm state. 'schocken' means that someone is badly frightened or unpleasantly surprised and is therefore emotionally unsettled. So 'beruhigen' fits after fear, anger, or excitement; 'schocken' fits with bad news or a very surprising experience.
