schweißen vs verbinden

to connect / to bandage

'verbinden' and 'schweißen' can both mean that parts or people come firmly together. 'verbinden' is general and does not say exactly how the connection is created. You can connect things with screws, cables, or glue. 'schweißen' is much more specific: in the literal sense, metal parts are usually joined firmly by heat or pressure. Figuratively, an experience can weld people or groups very closely together. Learners may confuse the words because 'schweißen' is a specific kind of 'verbinden'. If it is not about metalwork or a very strong human connection, 'verbinden' is usually more natural.
