Usage tips

Compare with

confusable

selbst vs sich

oneself / each other

'sich' and 'selbst' can both appear with people, but they do not have the same function. 'sich' is a reflexive pronoun: it shows that the action goes back to the subject, for example in 'sich waschen' (to wash oneself) or 'sich etwas kaufen' (to buy oneself something). 'selbst' is not an object like 'sich'; instead, it emphasizes a person or thing. It can mean that exactly this person does something, or it can mark surprising information like 'sogar' (even). The words are confused because you can see both in some sentences, for example 'Er macht es selbst' (He does it himself) and 'Er wäscht sich' (He washes himself). Pay attention: 'sich' belongs to the verb structure, while 'selbst' only adds emphasis or surprise.
