To have a verbal conflict or quarrel with someone, often because of personal disagreement or annoyance.
Die Geschwister streiten sich oft darüber, wer das Zimmer aufräumen muss.

The preposition after 'streiten' (to argue/dispute) changes the meaning. 'Sich streiten mit' (+ dative) indicates the person you are arguing with. 'Streiten über' (+ accusative) names the topic. 'Sich streiten um' (+ accusative) names the object that you want to have.

When it is about a personal conflict or competition, the verb is used reflexively: 'sich streiten' (to argue/fight). When it is about an objective debate, the verb can also be used without a reflexive pronoun.

When you argue with someone, it is often about everyday things. A typical construction is 'sich streiten (darüber), wer/was/wie ...' (to argue about who/what/how ...).

'kämpfen' and 'streiten' both have to do with conflict. 'kämpfen' is stronger and can be physical, military, or figurative: you fight against an opponent, fight for a goal, or struggle with a problem. 'streiten' is used mainly when people disagree or get annoyed with each other verbally. It can also be about a topic or about something several people want to have. The words can be confused because both describe confrontations. When it is about words and opinions, 'streiten' is usually more natural. When it is about great effort, an opponent, or a serious problem, 'kämpfen' fits better.
Am Wochenende streitet Leon mit seinem Bruder über den Haushalt.
On the weekend, Leon argues with his brother about the housework.
