The verb 'diskutieren' (to discuss) is usually used with two prepositions: You discuss 'über' (about) a topic (accusative) and 'mit' (with) a person (dative).
Wir haben mit den Nachbarn über den Lärm diskutiert.
We discussed the noise with the neighbors.
Make sure to always use the preposition 'über' with the accusative for the topic. A common source of errors is using the wrong preposition.
Die Studenten diskutieren über die Prüfungsergebnisse.
The students are discussing the exam results.
Common topics that people discuss are: a problem, a solution, a plan, the future, or politics.
Können wir später über deinen Plan für das Wochenende diskutieren?
Can we discuss your plan for the weekend later?
to talk
Reden über means neutrally making a topic the subject of a conversation. Diskutieren is especially appropriate when different opinions or arguments are exchanged. So not every conversation about a controversial issue is automatically a discussion.

Im Team diskutierten wir die geplanten Arbeitszeiten und verglichen unsere Argumente.
We discussed the planned working hours as a team and compared our arguments.
Im Team redeten wir über die geplanten Arbeitszeiten.
We talked about the planned working hours as a team.
