Usage tips
False friend
Careful: 'der Term' (the term) is not the same as the English word 'term'. In German, it is a technical term from mathematics or logic. The English 'term' can also mean a period of time (e.g., 'semester') or conditions ('Bedingungen').
EXAMPLE
Der Lehrer erklärte, wie man den Term vereinfacht.
The teacher explained how to simplify the term.
Register: technical language
The word 'Term' (term) is used almost exclusively in a technical context, especially in mathematics, logic, and linguistics. It is not used in normal everyday speech.
EXAMPLE
Für die Prüfung müssen wir die Definitionen der wichtigsten Terme kennen.
For the exam, we have to know the definitions of the most important terms.
Use in mathematics
In a mathematical context, 'Term' (term) is often combined with verbs like 'vereinfachen' (to simplify), 'umformen' (to transform/rearrange), or 'berechnen' (to calculate). An equation can also 'aus mehreren Termen bestehen' (consist of several terms).
EXAMPLE
Bitte vereinfachen Sie den folgenden Term so weit wie möglich.
Please simplify the following term as much as possible.
Use as a technical term
In this meaning, 'Term' (term) is often combined with an adjective that names the field, e.g., 'ein linguistischer Term' (a linguistic term) or 'ein philosophischer Term' (a philosophical term). Here it is a more formal variant of 'Fachbegriff' (technical term).
EXAMPLE
'Subjekt' ist ein grammatischer Term.
'Subject' is a grammatical term.

Term vs Wort
word
'das Wort' and 'der Term' can both refer to something that you write or say. 'Wort' is the normal, general word for a linguistic unit, for example in a sentence. 'Term' is used much more specifically: in mathematics for an expression with numbers or variables, or in technical language for a specific technical term. Learners may confuse the words because 'Term' sounds very general in some languages. In German, however, 'Term' is not the normal word for 'Wort'. In everyday language, people almost always say 'Wort'.

Im Matheunterricht vereinfacht die Klasse den Term mit zwei Variablen.
In math class, the class simplifies the term with two variables.
