Tropf vs Tropfen

drop

'Tropfen' and 'Tropf' look very similar, but they mean different things. A 'Tropfen' is a very small amount of liquid or, in the plural, a liquid medicine. A 'Tropf' is, in medicine, a device or infusion through which liquid slowly runs into a vein. Colloquially, 'Tropf' can also be a derogatory word for an awkward or helpless person. The risk of confusion is high because only the ending is different. The important point is: use 'Tropfen' for small amounts of liquid, and 'Tropf' in a hospital context or, very colloquially, for a person.

Visual example for Tropfen
Tropf

Im Krankenhaus bekam der Patient nach der Operation einen Tropf.

In the hospital, the patient was given an IV drip after the operation.

Tropfen

Ein Tropfen Öl reicht, damit die Tür nicht mehr quietscht.

A drop of oil is enough to stop the door from squeaking.
