Viele der im Bericht verwendeten Zahlen wurden aus einer älteren Studie übernommen.
Many of the figures used in the report were adopted from an older study.
Usage tips
Participle of the verb
The word 'übernommen' (adopted/taken on) is the past participle of the inseparable verb 'übernehmen' (to take over/adopt). It is used as an adjective or as part of the perfect or passive tense.
EXAMPLE
Die neue Regelung wurde von allen Abteilungen übernommen.
The new regulation was adopted by all departments.
Context clue
You can recognize the meaning from the sentence structure. If 'übernommen' (adopted) refers to a thing, it means 'taken from somewhere else'. If it appears with the reflexive pronoun 'sich' (oneself), it means that a person is overwhelmed.
EXAMPLE
Diese Definition ist aus dem Wörterbuch übernommen.
This definition is adopted from the dictionary.
Indicating origin
If you want to indicate the source from which something was adopted, use the prepositions 'aus' (from/out of) for texts or systems and 'von' (from/by) for people or institutions.
EXAMPLE
Der Code wurde aus einem Open-Source-Projekt übernommen.
The code was adopted from an open-source project.
Fixed reflexive expression
The meaning 'to be overwhelmed' exists only in the reflexive expression 'sich übernehmen' (to take on too much). You cannot say 'er ist übernommen'. The perfect form is always 'er hat sich übernommen' (he has taken on too much).
EXAMPLE
Pass auf, dass du dich mit dem Training nicht übernimmst.
Be careful not to take on too much with the training.

übernommen vs eigen
own / peculiar
'eigen' and 'übernommen' can both describe where an idea, a text, or a thing comes from. 'eigen' emphasizes that something belongs to a person or comes from that person themselves. 'übernommen', on the other hand, means that something comes from someone else or from another source and is reused. The contrast is especially important with ideas, wording, or concepts: an 'eigene Idee' (one's own idea) is developed independently, while an 'übernommene Idee' (adopted idea) originally comes from outside.
übernommen
Einige Sätze im Bericht sind aus einem alten Text übernommen.
Some sentences in the report were taken from an old text.
eigen
Für das Projekt hat Max eine eigene Idee entwickelt.
