'umbuchen' (to rebook / transfer) consists of 'um-' and 'buchen' (to book); here, 'um-' indicates a change. In a main clause with a simple verb form, 'um' separates and goes at the end; in a subordinate clause, the verb stays together. In the infinitive with 'zu', 'zu' goes between 'um' and 'buchen'.
Ich buche meine Reise um.
I am rebooking my trip.
Die Reise wird teurer, wenn ich sie umbuche.
The trip will become more expensive if I rebook it.
Wir versuchen, die Reise umzubuchen.
We are trying to rebook the trip.
The new date or transport connection is often introduced with 'auf' followed by the accusative. The item being changed is the accusative object, such as 'einen Flug' (a flight), 'eine Reise' (a trip), or 'ein Ticket' (a ticket).
Können Sie mein Ticket auf einen früheren Zug umbuchen?
Could you rebook my ticket for an earlier train?
In accounting, you can specify both accounts using the pattern 'einen Betrag von einem Konto auf ein anderes Konto umbuchen' (to transfer an amount from one account to another). 'von' takes the dative, while 'auf' takes the accusative here.
Wir müssen den Betrag von diesem Konto auf das richtige Konto umbuchen.
We need to transfer the amount from this account to the correct account.
