To change means of transport during a journey, that is, to get out of one vehicle and get into another in order to continue the trip.

'Umsteigen' (to transfer / switch) is a separable verb. In a main clause, the prefix 'um' goes at the end. In subordinate clauses and in the infinitive with 'zu', the verb stays together.
Ich steige am Hauptbahnhof um.

The preposition indicates the meaning. When traveling, you use 'in' + accusative for the new means of transport. When changing products or systems, you use 'auf' + accusative.

When it is about a change, 'umsteigen' (to switch) is often used for major changes: 'auf ein neues System umsteigen' (to switch to a new system), 'auf eine andere Software umsteigen' (to switch to different software), or 'auf eine vegetarische Ernährung umsteigen' (to switch to a vegetarian diet).

'ersetzen' and 'auf etwas umsteigen' can both mean that something old is no longer used and something new takes its place. 'ersetzen' puts more emphasis on the replacement itself: a part, a person, or a thing is replaced by another one. 'auf etwas umsteigen' puts more emphasis on the decision or changeover to another system, product, or habit. For broken things, 'ersetzen' sounds more natural. For new methods, programs, or habits, 'umsteigen' often fits better.
