'Umsteigen' (to transfer / switch) is a separable verb. In a main clause, the prefix 'um' goes at the end. In subordinate clauses and in the infinitive with 'zu', the verb stays together.
Ich steige am Hauptbahnhof um.
I transfer at the main station.
The preposition indicates the meaning. When traveling, you use 'in' + accusative for the new means of transport. When changing products or systems, you use 'auf' + accusative.

Both words can express a change during a journey. Wechseln refers to changing means of transport in general, while umsteigen explicitly means getting out of one vehicle and into another. umsteigen is therefore especially suitable for a specific connection involving a new vehicle; wechseln is more general.
In Köln stieg ich in den Zug nach Bonn um.
In Cologne, I changed to the train to Bonn.
In Köln wechselte ich den Zug und fuhr nach Bonn weiter.
