Knowledge or information that a person already has about a specific topic before they engage with it again or start learning about it.

'Vorwissen' (prior knowledge) is often used with verbs such as 'benötigen' (to need), 'erfordern' (to require), 'voraussetzen' (to presuppose), or 'mitbringen' (to bring). It appears especially often in the negative form to express that no prior knowledge is necessary.

To specify the area of knowledge, the preposition 'in' with the dative or 'auf dem Gebiet' (in the field) with the genitive is often used.

Kenntnisstand and Vorwissen both describe knowledge that someone already has. Kenntnisstand shows how much a person or group knows at a particular point in time. Vorwissen refers specifically to the knowledge that is already available before starting to study a new topic.
