Wall vs Mauer

wall

'die Mauer' and 'der Wall' can both refer to something people build to protect or separate off an area. A 'Mauer' is usually made of stone, brick, or concrete and has a solid, vertical form. A 'Wall' is more of a long embankment, often made of earth, and is especially used for old defensive structures or protection against water. Learners may confuse the words because both can act like a boundary or protection. For a solid stone or concrete wall, you normally say 'Mauer'. For earth-based protection or a dike, 'Wall' fits better.
